This website represents the embodiment of our investigation into Arabic Pidgin Language in the United Arab Emirates, also known as Emirati Pidgin Arabic, or EPA. This research has become one of its kind; never before have descriptive and applied linguistics enjoyed detailed language data of this caliber before, with the high levels of accuracy currently in evidence in lieu of this project.
The project’s aim is to explore the history of EPA, its speakers, and its sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic properties. This is done by recording and transcribing over 150 speakers from different age groups, professions, and genders, and examining the languages use and development in the region.
The project hopes to highlight the significance and influence of EPA, break down stigma and barriers to the language, and foster a culture of unity and festivity around EPA, which is being used by millions in the UAE and in the wider Middle Easter region, while also attracting scholars and academics globally to participate in the conversation around EPA and Pidgin Arabic.
